My Day at Island Spa + Sauna

Meet Island Spa + Sauna. A spa located in a strip mall off 27 in Edison. When you enter you leave your shoes + worries at the door.

I will come out + say it - this spa is not for the shy. If you are uncomfortable with nudity, especially being nude around strangers then this spa may not be for you. That is because to enjoy the four soaking tubs located in each gender’s bathhouses you must be fully naked. However, that is the only place where wearing clothing is not allowed. In the other areas of the spa you must wear the shorts + t-shirt outfit provided for you.

If you are looking to get out of your comfort zone for 2021 + experience something new I say give it a try. Like my mother thankfully taught me “you are never going to see these people again.”

There are three hot soaking tubs - 104 degree hot tub, a jetted tub + a 103 degree herbal infused soak tub. The fourth is a cold 70 degree tub. I enjoyed all three + loved them. If you never went from a cold tub to a hot tub, I highly recommend it because hey why not.

Unfortunately due to COVID the saunas + steam rooms are currently closed. Also the soaking tubs were limited to three people per tub. I wanted to avoid possible crowds so I got to the Spa at 9 AM when it opened. I stayed till around 2 PM + did not find it to be crowded at all. Rarely did I see more than two people in a soaking tub at a time. I felt very comfortable + safe while at the Spa in regards to COVID.

Now to the main event. My Korean Scrub. This is also not for the shy. The scrub area is located in an open area in the bathhouse with just frosted dividers + you must be fully nude for this service. It was a little out of my comfortable level but hey I am never going to see these people again.

I decided to get the Korean Scrub Plus package. For thirty minutes, an adorable little woman scrubbed me with loofah mittens removing dead skin + grime I probably never knew I had.

After being scrubbed cleaned, it was time for a 30 minute oil massage. 30 minutes of heaven filled with warm towels + warm oil. The finale. A soothing head massage + hair wash leaving my hair silky smooth.

How it took me this long to get a Korean scrub, I have no idea. I never knew I needed it until I got it. I never felt my skin so soft. Looks like a Korean Scrub will be a yearly occurrence for me + hopefully you too.

After my hour of bliss, I put on my Island Spa outfit headed to the main area. I went to the Spa cafe where I ordered bulgogi, thin tendered beef deliciously seasoned. The saunas are closed for use but they are open to hang out in. I found myself a crystal sauna, laid down + enjoyed my book.

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my spa day at Island Spa. I am unphased by nudity + other people being nude around me, but I can understand that this may be uncomfortable for many. Also you do not have to go in the soaking tubs rather just enjoy the spa + getaway. There is also of course always Sojo Spa. A bigger, fancier + clothing required Spa.

If you are down to try something new, I say go for it. That is what I did + it was fabulous. I took my shoes, but I left feeling refreshed + rejuvenated. Something I think we all need.

Price: $30 week $35 weekend

Price of my Korean Scrub: $95 which includes 20% gratuity
