A Weekend in New Paltz

Main Street Bistro peace sign in New Paltz

We just got back from our annual Fall Catskills trip. This trip we explored New Paltz + the surrounding areas. Here is how to spend a weekend in New Paltz including places to eat in New Paltz, things to do + more.

We stayed in an Air B+B right outside New Paltz in the neighboring town of Rosendale. It was an old farmhouse with a little pond about 10 minutes from the New Paltz Main Street.

Where to eat in New Paltz + beyond

Main Street Bistro

The place to eat in New Paltz is the Main Street Bistro where you can get delicious breakfast + more. The place is always packed + each time we went we got great food. Tip: they are closed on Tuesday.

If we head to the area again Grazery is on my list to check out. The sandwiches looked amazing.

Darlings

Around 15 minutes outside of New Paltz Main Street you will find Darlings in Tillson. It was a place you pass by + say oh what's that. I am beyond happy we stopped in. The place is a vibe + the food was great. I got shrimp + grits in creole sauce that was delicious. If you ever find yourself around the New Paltz area make it a point to stop at Darlings.

Santa Fe Burger Bar

Rosendale is a cute town near New Paltz where we stopped after our hike. We stopped into Santa Fe Burger Bar for of course burgers. They hit the spot after our hike.

Things to do in New Paltz + beyond

Main Street New Paltz

Buzzing with people + stores New Paltz Main Street area is a fun downtown to explore. There are vintage stores, tea shops, restaurants, bars, witch + plant shop (my favorite) + more. There are shops + restaurants in the Marketplace to explore as well. You can spend an afternoon walking around, shopping + grabbing bites to eat along the way.

waterfall at Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Around 20 minutes from New Paltz is Minnewaska State Park is a perfect park for avid hikers or beginners. There is a $10 per car entrance fee which is nothing compared to the exuberant $15 a person fee at the nearby Mohonk Preserve, which in my opinion is WAY too much so we didn't even entertain going there + I am glad we didn't. Since we were with my 4 year old daughter we decided to hike a beginner trail to the Awosting Falls which was stunning! It was the Lower Awosting Falls trail + was about a mile hike to the falls on a gravel path with gorgeous views of the falls. You can easily spend a day at Minnewaska + you should!

Orchards

There are a bunch of orchards around the New Paltz area. We decided to check out Twin Star Orchards whose slogan is "ugly apples taste better". You can easily spend a whole afternoon at Twin Star orchards picking ugly apples, sipping on Brooklyn Cider, eating their delicious wood fired food + enjoying the beautiful grounds. You CANNOT leave with out getting an apple cider donuts. They were the BEST apple cider donuts I've had.

If you are looking for a weekend away in upstate New York add New Paltz to your list. There is plenty to do from downtown strolling to hikes + more.
